Each semester I have to write a progress report to show what Lily has learned. It is apart of my agreement with my accountability group I am apart of. If you are interested in what she has been up to...read on.
History:
Lily has learned about the
homes, clothes, food, and transportation from 5000 years ago until 300 years
ago, including Ancient Egyptians, Romans, Vikings, medieval times, Chinese,
Europeans, and North American Indians. She also learned about the Europeans
traveling to the Americas.
Lily has also read and
answered comprehension question in the Egermeier’s
Bible Story Book. We have read the book together creation in Genesis thru
King Saul in 1 Samuel.
Lily has also been read
various stories of the first missionaries around the world in I Heard the Good News Today.
Through the entire history
curriculum, we have used maps and a globe to locate the countries around the
world.
Math:
Lily has learned many new
concepts this fall using Horizons Math A.
Ordinal numbers, place value (ones and tens), greater than and less than,
addition (single number 1-9 as well as double digits {not including carrying}
and also word problems), tally marks, equal and not equal, telling time on the
hour, half hour and quarter hour, counting monetary value of coins (penny,
nickel, and dime), measurement in inches, and identifying fractions (1/2, 1/3,
¼, 1/5). She has done extremely well for the most part. She did struggle with
telling the time, but after added practice on worksheets and with a watch, she
is doing much better and even naming the time to the exact minute (something we
have not covered in lessons at this time.)
Handwriting:
Lily is working her way
through Handwriting for a Reason. She
has enjoyed having a purpose for her handwriting.
Grammar:
At the beginning of the
semester I did not feel our chosen curriculum adequately covered grammar. After
research and recommendations, she began to work her way through First Language Lessons, Level 1. She has
learned about nouns (common and proper) specifically looking at her full name,
multiple family relationships, her address, and things. Within this curriculum
we have discussed famous paintings, read stories followed up with comprehension
questions, and the memorization of 2 poems thus far.
Phonics:
Lily has completed Explode the Code Book 1. She has learned
all the short vowel sounds. Since beginning Explode
the Code Book 2, she has started learning consonant blends at the beginning
of words.
Reading:
Sonlight Curriculum has
written their own reading books. The curriculum only had her reading 2 pages
per day. I did not feel that gave her enough practice at this early stage of
reading. Therefore, I increased her requirements to anywhere from 6-10 pages
per day. She has completed I Can Read It!
Book 1 and I Can Read It! Book 2.
Read-a-louds:
Lily has listened to books
this semester and answered comprehension questions after each chapter. Books
read are Beezus and Ramona, The Boxcar
Children, Dolphin Adventure, My Father’s Dragon, Mary on Horseback, and Here’s a Penny.
Poetry:
Each day we read a poem from either
The Arnold Lobel Book of Mother Goose
or The Llama Who Had No Pajama.
Science:
Lily enjoys science. She has
learned many new things this semester. Topics include rotation/revolution of
the Earth compared to sun, seasons, day/night, weather, rocks and fossils,
earthquakes, volcanoes, rivers, and various landscapes: mountains, deserts,
grasslands, rainforests, polar regions, and oceans. While studying oceans, she
learned about waves, currents, tides, and coasts,. She has also learned about
living things (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, creepy crawlies, and ocean
life) and what they need to survive.
Her favorite part of the
school week is doing science experiments. She has completed various experiment
learning about air, wind direction, how to grow plants in a bottle garden,
differences in leaf shapes, plants needs for light and water, and layers of the
soil.
